ITB V3 #4008

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – zajezdnia Alexandra. Here’s another ex-V2A Type car that has been completely transformed by RATB into a low-floor V3A, standing alongside a standard V3A for comparison.

ITB V3 #4004

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. Yesterday’s photo of stripped-down V2A tram #4014 got me thinking - http://www.phototrans.eu/14,294286,0.html. Of course, it isn’t being scrapped, but is the next donor car for one of these conversions! RATB are taking six-axle, two section V2A cars and rebuilding them with a low-floor centre section and chopper control, so they become Type V3A. Here are two newly converted examples – compare them with an unmodified V3A and you’ll see that the transformation is amazing.

Tramway snowplough #032

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. Work is just beginning on the overhaul of large snowplough 032, which seems to involve welding over the rust! These are impressive machines built in the Soviet style.

Tramway snowplough #31

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. Large snowplough 31, fully overhauled and almost ready to be handed back to its home depot. Some impressive work is carried out here in what, to Western eyes, are very primitive and chaotic conditions. Numbering of these machines is rather random – most others have a fleet number starting with ‘0’, but this one doesn’t.

ITB V2A #4018

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. An RATP V2A Type car stands in the works yard. Just a few feet away, other cars are being scrapped, so maybe this will suffer the same fate. Components have been carefully removed for re-use, though, so perhaps it’s just being stripped for overhaul? It’s difficult to tell in this place……

Tramway snowplough #030

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. Inside the repair workshops, large snowplough 030 undergoes a full renovation ready for the coming winter. The men don’t appear to be in much hurry to finish it - perhaps they are typical British workers on an exchange programme? These large and powerful ploughs are based at depots throughout the city.

Tramway works car #6417

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. A further selection from the fascinating RATB central workshops. This tram will obviously never run again, but is an interesting survivor that has (so far) escaped the cutting torch. I know nothing about its history. Double cab works cars like this are still quite common in some Eastern European countries, but this appears to be the only one left in Bucuresti.

Tramway snowbroom #7

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. Bucuresti has serious snowfalls in winter and RATB is well equipped to cope - each depot has a number of purpose-built tramway snow sweepers, ploughs and blowers. URAC obviously has a programme to overhaul these during the summer months – sweeper 07 has just emerged in sparkling, ex-works condition and is waiting to go back to its home depot.

Saurer 5DUK-A #5015

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. A last view of an ex-Geneve Saurer trolleybus, standing in the URAC scrap line surrounded by many old buses and trolleys for destruction. Bucuresti ran a batch of these nice-looking vehicles until a year or two ago, when enough new Skodas arrived to allow them to be withdrawn. This was the only one I found – maybe it was the very last to survive. Originally, in Geneve, these were MOTOR buses and were only converted later into trolleybuses.

Tramway shunting locomotive #998B

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. To complete the set, here is a picture of ‘donkey’ 998B, which was standing inside a shed on the day I visited. I don’t know the precise history of these locomotives, but they have been around for some time and were presumably built here from tram components. They don’t venture out of the works complex.

Tramway shunting locomotive #998A

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. The green ‘donkey’ standing outside the main tramway overhaul workshops. The underframes of these three locomotives are based on old tramcars – there are several flat trucks around the site with identical features and I suspect these were 1920s Thompson type 4-wheelers, withdrawn in the early 1970s.

Tramway shunting locomotive #998

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – Uzina de Reparatii Altelierele Centrale (‘URAC’). This is an amazing place - the RATB central bus and tram workshops. Here they do everything, from building new vehicles, to repairs and overhauls, to scrapping. Many of the buildings were originally built for horse trams. Three little tram shunting locomotives are used to move vehicles around the site – the staff call them ‘donkeys’, which is quite a good description for the work they do.

Rocar 412E #7459

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Bujoreni. The Rocar trolleybuses have now nearly all gone, but one or two remain, including this rare Type 412E of 1999 receiving attention in the depot. This was a vast improvement on early Rocars, which were a very basic trolleybus and won’t be much missed.

Rocar Autodromo 812EA #7460

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Bujoreni. Another view of the nice 812E. It can be seen in service nearly every day, mostly on Line 71 which passes Gara de Nord.

Rocar Autodromo 812EA #7460

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Bujoreni. This unique Rocar 812E was no doubt produced just before the company failed, as it remains the only example of this type. RATB staff rate it very highly and say it never breaks down or causes trouble. Sadly, it will probably have a fairly short life, as spare parts will eventually be impossible to obtain.

Irisbus Citelis 12T #5381

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Bujoreni. One of the new fleet of Astra Irisbuses leaving the depot. These are all painted plain white.

Ikarus 415.80 #5254

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Bujoreni. An Ikarus leaves the depot to take up service, followed by a newer Astra trolleybus - these have now replaced all the older DAC Rocars.

Ikarus 415.80 #5136

26 august 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Bujoreni. RATB mostly favoured locally-built Rocar trolleybuses for its large network, until the company went bust in 2003. They also operate a large batch of Ikarus 415T like these, now used mainly by the driving school.

Bucur V2A-T #3004

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Militari. The first ‘production’ Bucur 1 car. Although the front end looks very neat and shiny, you can see from my previous photo just how thin the glass fibre is underneath. Perhaps URAC will be forced to redesign it with better crash protection? Bucuresti road traffic is so crazy that collisions happen all the time (even worse than Warszawa, which is bad enough).

Bucur V2A-T #3010

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Militari. Bucur car 3010 is brand new and hasn’t even been registered yet. Note the typical Tatra ventilation grilles on the body side and also the not-so-typical ventilation system at the front! I don’t think they make them quite like this…….

Bucur V2A-T #3003

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Militari. The third Bucur 1 prototype. The electrical systems and styling details on this later version are slightly different, although it is still a PCC at heart (or rather, one-and-a-half PCCs).

Electroputere EP/V3A #S02

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Militari. This EP/V3A works car is in less than sparkling condition, but is still regularly used for shunting around the depot.

Electroputere EP/V3A #S04

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Alexandria. An old EP/V3A car converted to a works tram. Several of these still exist in the works fleet in varying stages of dereliction, although this particular one is in very good condition.

Rathgeber M5.65 #2416

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Alexandria. Even after nearly fifty years in service at Munchen, these distinctive Rathgeber cars were a useful addition to the RATB tramway fleet. They are now all withdrawn, although a few remain as general work equipment. Car 2416 still has its matching trailer (3474) – unusual for works car operations. It also retains all its original German notices inside (or did, until 26 September).

ITB V3A #295

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Alexandria. I have no idea why this particular V3A-93M is painted in all-over lilac livery – perhaps because they could. Anyway, quite a nice colour scheme.

Electroputere EP/V3A #6001

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. An earlier generation of Bucuresti trams were the locally-built EP/V3A Type. A few survive as works cars, but 6001 has been set aside in a corner of the works yard, hopefully for eventual preservation as it was the first of the type.

ITB Bucur LF

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. The best picture I could manage in the space available! This is the very latest URAC-built tram, a partly low-floor, six-axle articulated design that owes much to the Bombardier NGT6. It is still under development and is hidden away from view except from occasional test runs. Unlike other Romanian cities, RATB has a long history of designing and building its own trams and has the resources at URAC to do so - maybe this prototype will lead to the production of many more.

Ikarus-Zemun IK4 #B 24 FBT

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. This emergency response vehicle is a rebuilt Serbian Ikarbus Zemun IK-4R. The entrance door has been panelled over and inside is a very serviceable crew mess room, toilet and other facilities, plus space for tools and equipment. It was once a normal RATB service bus.

Ikarus 256 #B 01 HYX

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – Uzina de Reparatii Atelierele Centrale RATB (URAC). One of a very small number of coaches owned by RATB, this Ikarus is possibly used for worker transport to the central works, where it was parked.

Bucur V2A-T #3008

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Militari. The production version of the locally-built Bucur car differs slightly from cars 3001-3, but is also put together from donor Tatra trams. Ten of these have been built recently – car 3008, seen here, has yet to receive a registration number, so is possibly still under test.

Tatra T4R #3322

27 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Militari. A number of Tatra T4R cars came new to Bucuresti in the 1970s, but are now gradually being withdrawn – although overhauls and renovations are still taking place in the central workshops. 3322 and 3323 stand in the Militari depot yard awaiting their next duty.

Bucur V2S-T #3001

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Militari. A side view of prototype Bucur car 3001 clearly shows its Tatra PCC underframe. The huge rubber fenders are very useful in the crazy Bucuresti traffic (and also for pushing it when it breaks down……) T4R cars 3394 and 3331 gave their lives to make this one.

Bucur V2S-T #3002

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Militari. Cars 3002 and 3001 (behind) are prototype double-ended trams, built from one-and-a-half Tatra T4s. I don’t think the yellow strip above the doors indicate first class seats (as on UK trains) - inside is still pure high-floor Tatra! The donors for 3002 were T4R cars 3342 and 3414.

ITB V3A #131

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Alexandria. Another view of car 131 shows the position of the central low-floor section. Until URAC began building a few Bucur type cars recently, these were the most modern Bucuresti trams.

Rathgeber M5.65 #2416

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Alexandria. Three generations of Bucuresti trams. 2416 is from a batch of cars that came second-hand from Munchen in Germany. All are now withdrawn from passenger service and those that remain are works cars. Car 131 has chopper control, a central low-floor section and a sexy new body shell, but is really just a rebuilt V3A like 238 on the right. It’s now classed as Type V3A-93-CH-PPC.

ITB V3A #352

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – Calea Rahovei. This V3A-93M Type has been modernised with chopper control and a new front end, but is largely the same old tram underneath. The Electroputere works at Craiova was responsible for the rebuilding.

ITB V3A #261

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – Str Barbu Vacarescu. A Line 34 Type V3A car fighting through the traffic in central Bucuresti. In some streets there are a few central loading islands, but many mad car drivers ignore them and just drive past on either side.

URAC V3A-93-2S #034

30 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – Calea Giulesti. A line of double-ended cars at the busy Line 44 terminus is led by 034, a V3A-2S Type, with other six- and eight-axle cars behind. Passengers might be fooled by the low-floor appearance of this car, but when the doors open there are steps inside the conventional high floor – only the doors are low!

ITB V2A-2S #4037

30 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – Calea Giulesti. Line 44 is currently detached from the rest of the tramway network because of major road works. A shuttle service is therefore operated with double-ended cars, including this six-axle Type V2A-2S, of which Bucuresti has only eight.

ITB V3A #321

26 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – Sos.Alexandria. Bucuresti has a large tram and trolleybus network, running in streets with severe traffic congestion, making journeys extremely slow. Trams are mostly a mixture of types built in the Bucuresti central workshops (“URAC”), plus a few second-hand Tatras. 321 is a Type V3A eight-axle articulated, single-ended car, which has just arrived at the busy Line 32 terminus outside Alexandria depot.
