Scania N230UD / Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 #15612

23 february 2014 - Stagecoach Bus Depot, Corn St, Witney. Puddles everywhere: this about sums up the UK recently, but this puddle has nothing to do with our nations long tradition of rain! Being near the bus wash, this part of the depot often gets wet and I think used to good effect in this shot.

23 february 2014 - Stagecoach Bus Depot, Corn Street, Witney. I have been trying to create better night photographs, having been inspired by some spectacular photos by other contributors to this site. The symmetrical nature of identical buses helps to create a good picture of course!

23 february 2014 - Stagecoach Bus Depot, Corn Street, Witney. The depot is confined to quite a small space, and manoeuvring buses in the dark and with wet mirrors after being through the wash potentially leads to damage, hence why this post is protected with old tires and provided a contrast to this photo as nightfall pulled its veil over town.

23 february 2014 - Stagecoach Bus Depot, Corn St, Witney. Waiting to be taken through the bus wash, still bearing the dirt from the previous nights work before being prepared for run-out on Monday morning.

23 february 2014 - Carterton Road, Brize Norton. Carterton is home to the UK`s largest Royal Air Force base, named after the nearby village of Brize Norton. This is about the best shot available of a plane and bus together unfortunately, but something I wanted to document all the same.

Scania N230UD / Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 #15620

23 february 2014 - Main Road, Curbridge. During the week the S1 serves Curbridge once every 30 minutes, but on Sundays Curbridge is served once every 20 minutes making it a much easier day to get some photographs here.

Volvo Olympian / Northern Counties Palatine II #34177

18 february 2014 - Kernick Road, Penryn. The Kernick area of Penryn is industrial and also houses growing out-of-town retail developments, all of which can be seen from my home village of Mabe Burnthouse, which overlooks the activity from its proud position on the hillside.

Volvo Olympian / Northern Counties Palatine II #34177

18 february 2014 - Antron Hill, Mabe Burnthouse. Seen in my home village where I was raised and spent my childhood is this exile from Bristol, now living out it`s twilight years in Cornwall. This has long been the tradition: Cornwall is the last place a bus will serve before the scrap man gets hold of it. This is not always true of course, but I suspect in this case it will be.

Dennis Trident 2 / Alexander ALX400 #499

10 february 2014 - B3276, Mawgan Porth. This bus could not be any further from it`s first home: both in terms of distance and the type of terrain!

3 february 2014 - Queen St, Portsmouth. The individually liveried vehicle for the shuttle service between the city centre and the Hovertravel terminal in Southsea is seen here passing the monumental entrance to HMS Nelson.

10 february 2014 - St Clement`s Close, Truro. Seen here providing a daily shuttle service from one of Truros private schools to the nearest rail station is this vehicle, catching the rays of winter sun between the storms.

3 february 2014 - Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, Portsmouth. Seen reaching its terminus is this double-deck vehicle, heavily branded for the 700 service which stretches along the south coast. Here in the background is the Royal Naval War Memorial, reflecting the close relationship between this city and the Royal Navy.

Alexander Dennis Enviro 300 II #27668

3 february 2014 - Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, Portsmouth. The 700 service operates with a mixture of single and double decked vehicles: here is an unbranded example of the former.

3 february 2014 - Commercial Road South, Portsmouth.

Scania CN94UB #65006

3 february 2014 - Commercial Road South, Portsmouth. Here, comparison can be made between two generations of First single-deck types and also the old and new liveries.

17 october 2013 - B4044, Swinford, nr. Farmoor. A sunny day view of the River Thames, which at the time of posting is now completely flooded. The fields you see here are now like lakes after weeks of prolonged rainfall in the area.

Mercedes-Benz 814 D / Plaxton Beaver 2 #599

10 february 2014 - Watergate Road, Watergate Bay, nr. Newquay. I was employed by Western Greyhound when this bus was purchased, second-hand. Although many of this type were owned and operated, this one was different. With wood effect dashboard and in immaculate condition with resplendent silver paint work and red coach-type seats, the decision was taken not to repaint this vehicle and make it a vehicle for private hires. When not engaged on private hire work, it would do a duty that kept it local and on routes where it was not likely to be damaged. It gained it`s own Facebook page as local people started to spot this "different" Western Greyhound bus all over Cornwall. Now time has passed, it will work all routes though was repainted in a darker shade of silver in 2012 and received special vinyls to commemorate the Queens diamond jubilee, which it retains to this day.

Dennis Trident 2 / Alexander ALX400 #499

10 february 2014 - Watergate Road, Watergate Bay, nr. Newquay. This operator acquired a number of these former London Dennis Tridents following the need to replace buses lost in a large depot fire last year, and also due to an increasingly urgent need to replace step-entrance buses. This service very rarely operates with double-deck vehicles now, although in the past 2 full journeys a day were operated by a double-decker. So, to see this was a massive surprise on a morning journey.

Scania N230UD / Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 #15599

3 february 2014 - Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, Portsmouth. The 700 is a lengthy route along the south coast of the UK and uses a large number of vehicles: a mixture of single and double-deck, most heavily branded for the service. An example of the latter is seen here passing the D-Day Museum, hence the large weaponry!

Alexander Dennis Enviro 300 II #27877

3 february 2014 - The Hard, Portsea, Portsmouth. Portsmouth is home to a deep history of the British Navy, and some important vessels from the past are kept at the historic dockyard and are now a popular tourist attraction in the area. One such ship is HMS Warrior, the first armour-plated, iron-hulled warship in the British Fleet and is seen in the background here.

Alexander Dennis Enviro 300 II #27869

3 february 2014 - Commercial Road South, Portsmouth. Stagecoach South brand a lot of their services very heavily and quite unlike that of many other Stagecoach areas. A case in point is seen here.

Wright StreetLite #63051

3 february 2014 - The Hard Interchange, Portsmouth. FirstGroup have recently invested heavily in parts of the UK, and an example was a large batch of these StreetLite vehicles for the Hampshire and Dorset area, some of which are branded in the alternative blue and gold livery, as seen here.

29 october 2013 - Poldhu Cove, nr. Mullion. This former London vehicle starts the steep ascent from Poldhu Cove toward Cury. This location has been the focus of media attention this week, when a video shot on a mobile phone of a bus passing through thick sea foam caused by the recent storms became `viral` on the internet.

31 january 2014 - St Mary`s Way, Melton Mowbray.

Dennis Dart SLF / Plaxton Pointer 2 #508

31 january 2014 - Burton Street, Melton Mowbray. The local council have recently opened their new office and administrative centre, and it seems fitting to have it as the backdrop for this local bus.

Optare Tempo #777

31 january 2014 - Watergate, Grantham.

Optare Solo M950 #318

31 january 2014 - High Street, Grantham. The town hall building can just be seen across the green: what a shame there are trees obscuring it from all angles!

Optare Tempo #778

31 january 2014 - High Street, Grantham. The Optare Tempo X1130 is a very unusual model. Longer or shorter variants are more numerous, so I was very pleased to be able to get 2 in the same picture and on the same route! Given their size and weight it is also unusual to find such vehicles confined to local town service work, but this pair are normally always allocated to this local service.

Optare Solo M950 #318

31 january 2014 - High Street, Grantham. Lincolnshire RoadCar used to have a depot and heavy presence in the town of Grantham, but it was closed before Stagecoach bought the business. Meanwhile, Centrebus had been growing their operations in small pockets throughout the UK and stepped in to take on the Grantham town services with a fleet of modern vehicles.

Scania L94UB / Wright Solar #NC06 PCC

30 january 2014 - Lindum Road, Lincoln. I am always more interested in what small, independent operators have to offer in the cities of the UK which are usually dominated by large, corporate operators. PC Coaches fit the bill nicely and link the city to villages where big companies struggle to find profit, but smaller operators with lower overheads can stand a better chance. They also use a fleet of impressively modern vehicles, and the Wright/Scania combination is rare outside of big operators.

Optare Solo M1020 #47398

30 january 2014 - Monks Road, Lincoln. Soon after purchasing the Lincolnshire RoadCar business along with the Traction Group, Stagecoach set about a fleet renewals program. One of the first batches to arrive included this Optare Solo, of the unusual maximum length M1020 variety. In 2011 Stagecoach used this batch of vehicles to experiment with bio-methane power, which they were converted to run on. The cost of conversion was covered by Lincolnshire county council and the East Midlands Development Agency.

Mercedes-Benz 411 CDI / Koch #BU06 CVD

30 january 2014 - Lindum Road, Lincoln. PC Coaches run a frequent service from the city centre and station to the Cathedral, which is elevated some way above the city and situated on such a steep hill that some people may find hard to walk to it. For this service there are a small number of these nimble little Mercedes Sprinters: the mountain goat of the UK bus industry!

Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 #19124

30 january 2014 - Lindum Road, Lincoln. Stagecoach have painted this vehicle in a completely different scheme to the usual corporate "swoops". This livery is a stylised version of the Lincolnshire county flag, and in my personal opinion looks fantastic. It is refreshing to see a local identity with local meaning and still very colourful.

TransBus President #18047

30 january 2014 - Broadgate, Lincoln. Relatively rare within the Stagecoach group is the Transbus President body, of which only a few low-height versions were ordered. Despite the terrible weather, I thought the rich red brick of the building helped lift the atmosphere a little here.

Volvo Olympian / Alexander RH #16143

30 january 2014 - Lindum Road, Lincoln. As these vehicles are not compliant with Disability Discrimination Act regulations, they are now becoming a rare sight before they are outlawed from regular bus services completely in 2017. As replacements and newer outcasts from London flood the country, sights like this are becoming rare. There is a concentration of these vehicles in Lincolnshire, but investment is apace among the single deck fleet, so I suspect these have little time left now.

Volvo Olympian / Alexander RH #16136

30 january 2014 - Melville Street, Lincoln. Social club buildings are now a rare sight, especially in the south of the UK. Therefore it was a pleasant surprise to see such a building still in good repair on a visit north, though I am not sure if it is still used as originally intended. Either way, it makes for a pleasant backdrop to another rapidly declining british tradition: the Olympian double decker, now being replaced by low-floor vehicles which will be mandatory from 2017.

Scania N230UD / Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 #15808

30 january 2014 - Broadgate, Lincoln. Unfortunately the day of my visit was blighted by terrible weather: biting cold winds and misty rain which spoiled the spectacular views of Lincoln Cathedral, seen here in the background still. Roll on summer!

Optare Solo M950 #PC09 PCC

30 january 2014 - St Mary`s Street, Lincoln. Bringing a little colour to the city is this vehicle, worked by independent operator PC Coaches on a small network of routes linking Lincoln to local villages. PC Coaches bus services are not all allocated a service number.

Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 #19076

30 january 2014 - St Mary`s Street, Lincoln. Stagecoach are also a customer for the integral Enviro 400 product, not just on the Scania chassis. The integral versions are fewer in number through the group and tend to be used on shorter distance routes compared to the Scania mounted vehicles carrying the same body.

Scania N230UD / Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 #15508

30 january 2014 - St Mary`s Street, Lincoln. The Scania N230UD is the Stagecoach standard type for double-deck vehicles working longer distance routes. The Lincolnshire Interconnect network of inter-urban services are indeed longer distance, and this is reflected by the specification of these vehicles.

MAN 12.240 HOCL-NL / Plaxton Centro #MX09 CHK

29 january 2014 - Fenton Street, Scunthorpe. The Plaxton Centro is a relatively rare sight in the UK, especially when mounted on an MAN chassis such as this example.

Optare Solo M920 #47269

29 january 2014 - Fenton Street, Scunthorpe. Recently repainted in to a revised version of the Stagecoach corporate livery is this native Optare Solo, acquired by Stagecoach along with the RoadCar operations following the acquisition of the Yorkshire Traction group in 2005.

Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 II 10,7m #YX09 HYV

29 january 2014 - Bridge Street, Brigg. This operator runs two services linking Brigg and Scunthorpe. The 95 is a lengthy route taking in villages between the two, whereas the 4 is more frequent and direct.

VDL SB120 / Plaxton Centro #WUK 155

29 january 2014 - Bridge Street, Brigg, Lincs. The Plaxton Centro body was not hugely popular in the UK, nor was the VDL SB120 chassis on which is was based, despite the massive similarities to the very popular Dennis Dart chassis. The engine used in the SB120, although badged as a Paccar unit was developed with Cummins and Iveco under the European Engine Allicance and is identical to the Cummins ISBE4 engine, which is also very popular due to its prolific use in the Dennis Dart chassis. Also, I am sure many readers will be interested in the Hornsbys vehicle that previously wore this `cherished` registration mark: One of only a handful of Renault PR100`s to operate in the UK!

VDL DB250 / Wright Pulsar Gemini #4766

28 january 2014 - A607 Leicester Road, near Frisby-on-the-Wreake. The movie cliché says you`re supposed to drive in to the sunset, but here you can see quite the opposite, but they do like to do things differently in Leicestershire ;)
