Too big

Usually digital cameras are making huge photos. Huge means in this case large resolution and many/many pixels. For example 10 Mega Pixels means that image written photo camera is 3648 x 2736 or 3872 x 2584 pixels. Usually computers display are from ancient 800 x 600 to modern 2048 x 1536. This means that image won't fit into display screen. So we have to resize the image to fit computer displays. Although phototrans.eu resizes very big images to 1024 x 768 dimensions you can do it better by yourself.

First you have to open or fix all other problems with image like darkness, lightness, not straight or white balanse and then go to resizing image. And then go to menu Image -> Scale Image. After clicking it menu will be displayed: Fill in desired resulution (for example 1024) and choose method of interpolation to bicubic. Please avoid situation that one of final dimensions is smaller than desired (red dot on following picture - width of image after scalling will be too small). The best choice in this case is below (1024 x 768) and click button near blue dot to confirm change. After scaling image is possible that you will lost some details and overall impression that photo is unsharp you can correct it by sharpening photo.

Little unsharp photo

What to do if photo looks little bit unsharp? You can correct it by GIMP.

Usually after scaling image you will see it unsharped but in original resolution it looked quite fair. Do not worry, try to use menu Filters -> Enhance -> Sharpen as on picture: The small menu with one slide will be displayed: Play with it and choose your best choice (My is around 25-30) and confirm changes. That is all. You can go to bad dimensions chapter.

Bad dimensions

Analog photo cameras and DSL are taking photos in proportions 3 / 2. Digital toys are doing in 4 / 3 or other. When you crop or scale image you can get totally random dimensions of image? How to deal with that? In GIMP you have tool for it. You can get it via Image -> Canvas Size as below in Serbian translation: You will be opened menu to adjust witdth and height of image. Carefully fill up all needed forms like width (red dot), height (green dot) and align offset to get better composition by draging image near yellow dot. In the end confirm changes by button near blue dot.

Askew, Not Straight

Sometimes happens that you made not straight photo. It happens also to me but don't panic. In opposite to unsharp, blurred photos you can easily fix it by photo editor like Gimp. It is free and quite good.

First you have to open it in original size (maximum what your camera provides - for me it is about 4000x3000px). Next you have to choose things in the crop which are surely straight - horizontal or vertical. The good choice is buildings, line of horizont (for example sea or other water). Sometimes we can use pillars and trees but with verification. Human eyes are very sensitive for angles of objects so you must be scrupulous when choosing and aligning your drawing. Drag and drop rulers by mouse from side of drawing area. Next you have to use Rotate Tool in GIMP and align photo (keyboard shortcut: Shift + R) using mouse. After finishing work confirm it. And then crop image using Crop Tool (keyboard shortcut: Shift + C). Unfortunately cropping image caused cutting nice church tower. Next step is to resize image. This is explained in Too big image chapter. The final effect after adjusting levels are on image: Taken from transport.wroc.biz
